Low Energy, Fatigue & Burnout in Ottawa

NutriChem’s clinic on Carling Avenue provides naturopathic support for low energy, chronic fatigue, and burnout to patients across Ottawa. Exhaustion is a symptom rather than a diagnosis, and it has causes. Iron, B12, thyroid function, blood sugar, sleep quality, and hormonal change each produce it, and each is testable. Burnout treatment starts by finding which of them applies to you rather than assuming the answer is rest.

Why You Are Exhausted

Low iron is one of the most common causes and one of the most overlooked, because ferritin can remain low even when hemoglobin still reads normal. B12 and folate deficiency produce the same flat exhaustion. An underactive thyroid slows everything, including energy, and it frequently goes undiagnosed for years.

Blood sugar that swings hard leaves you drained by mid-afternoon. Sleep that looks adequate on paper can still be unrefreshing. Perimenopause changes energy before it changes anything else. Digestive problems affect how well you absorb the nutrients energy depends on, and a run of illness can leave fatigue that outlasts the infection.

Most patients arrive after being told their bloodwork is fine. Standard panels are narrow, and a normal value is a wide range that does not always mean it’s optimal for you.

Burnout in Ottawa

What Burnout Actually Is

The World Health Organization classifies burnout in ICD-11 as an occupational phenomenon rather than a medical condition, defined by three things. Energy depletion or exhaustion. Mental distance from your job, or cynicism about it. Reduced professional efficacy, meaning the sense that you are no longer effective at work.

That definition matters because it means burnout is not a diagnosis you treat with a supplement. What we can do is address the physiological effects of chronic workplace stress, including depleted nutrient stores, disrupted sleep, blood sugar instability, and a stress response that no longer switches off.

How Our Naturopathic Approach Works

There is no packaged program. Care is arranged as individual consultations. The first appointment is a full intake, covering when the fatigue started, how it feels throughout the day, your sleep, diet, digestion, workload, cycle history, medications, and any bloodwork you already have.

From there, the work is identifying which drivers are active. This is functional medicine applied to energy, which means testing the physiology rather than prescribing rest and hoping.

Naturopathic doctors in Ontario are regulated health professionals. Care runs alongside your family doctor rather than in place of them, and where a medical diagnosis is the more likely explanation, you will be sent back to them.

Testing We Use

We test with purpose: only when the results will inform or change your plan.

Iron studies mean ferritin as well as hemoglobin, since ferritin is where depletion shows first. B12 and folate are checked alongside them.

A full thyroid panel includes TSH, free T3, free T4, and thyroid antibody levels, because a TSH-only test can miss patterns that leave people exhausted for years.

Blood sugar is measured with fasting glucose and insulin levels together, and vitamin D is worth checking during an Ottawa winter. Inflammatory markers, cortisol rhythm across the day, and hormone panels are added where the picture calls for them.

We can do advanced stool testing if digestive concerns are flagged by the practitioner

What Treatment Can Look Like

Repletion comes first where testing shows a deficit. Iron, B12, vitamin D, and magnesium are the common ones, and getting the form and dose right matters more than most people are told, particularly with iron, which is poorly tolerated in the wrong preparation.

Nutrition is aimed at steady energy rather than restriction. Protein at breakfast, meals without long gaps, and an honest look at how much caffeine is propping up the day. Our ND will make any dietary recommendations.

Sleep is treated as a clinical target because fatigue rarely lifts when sleep remains broken. Where sleep is unrefreshing despite enough hours in bed, screening for sleep apnea is a medical question, and your practitioner will say so rather than treat around it. NutriChem offers at-home sleep apnea testing

Common Questions

A naturopathic doctor works through the testable causes of fatigue, which commonly include iron, B12, thyroid, blood sugar, sleep, and hormones, and then treats what is found. Results depend on the cause. We will work with your medical doctor if a serious underlying cause is suspected or found

There is no single treatment, because burnout is an occupational syndrome rather than a disease. The clinical work is repairing what chronic stress has depleted, meaning nutrient stores, sleep, and blood sugar stability, alongside the changes to workload that only you can make.

Standard panels are narrow, so the range within the reference is not always optimal. Ferritin is the usual example, since it can sit low enough to leave you exhausted even when hemoglobin still reads normal. Your practitioner will dig deeper to try to uncover what may be contributing to your fatigue.

Not as a diagnosis, though if you have landed here searching that phrase, you are not wrong about how you feel. The exhaustion is real, and so is the frustration of being told your results are normal. What the term gets wrong is the mechanism. Adrenal fatigue is not recognized by any endocrinology society, and the evidence reviewed to date does not support it.
