Hormone Health in Ottawa

NutriChem’s clinic on Carling Avenue provides hormone testing and hormone balance support to patients across Ottawa. Hormone imbalance is a broad phrase rather than a diagnosis, and that is part of why it stays unresolved for so many people. What it usually points to is one of a small number of specific, testable things, and the work here is finding out which.

Signs Hormones Are Involved

Cycles that are irregular, absent, heavy, or newly painful. Weight that shifted without a change in diet. Fatigue that sleep does not fix. Mood swings, low mood, or anxiety that track with the month. Acne or unwanted hair growth. Hot flashes and night sweats. Low libido. Difficulty conceiving. Feeling cold, or losing hair, or both.

These are the symptoms most often waved through as normal or stress. Some of them are. Several are not, and the difference is testable.

Hormone Testing We Use

This is what the clinic does first because assumptions are expensive and testing is not.

A hormone panel measures the sex hormones, meaning estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone, along with DHEA-S, SHBG, LH, FSH, and prolactin. Where ovarian reserve is a question, anti-Mullerian hormone is added.

Timing changes the result. Progesterone is meaningful only in the luteal phase, and a mid-cycle reading of the same hormone tells you almost nothing. Testing is scheduled to your cycle rather than to your calendar.

Cortisol is read across a day rather than as a single number, because the shape of the curve carries the information.

A full thyroid panel includes TSH, free T3, free T4, and antibodies, since a TSH-only test misses patterns that leave people exhausted, cold, and heavier for years.

Insulin and fasting glucose are read together because insulin drives sex hormones more than most patients are ever told.

Testing is ordered where it will change the plan, and we read the results you already have rather than repeat them.

Where To Go From Here

Hormone health is a category rather than a condition. What you actually need depends on which part of it applies to you.

PMOS, the condition formerly called PCOS, is the most common endocrine condition in women of reproductive age and the leading cause of ovulatory infertility. It is driven by insulin and androgens more than by the ovaries.

Thyroid disease affects metabolism, mood, energy, weight, and cycles, and it is common and frequently missed.

Fertility depends on ovulation, thyroid function, and insulin, and on sperm quality, which is involved in roughly half of cases.

Perimenopause and menopause change hormones over years rather than overnight, and the symptoms often start well before cycles do anything obvious.

How Our Naturopathic Approach Works

There is no packaged program. Care is arranged as individual consultations with a naturopathic doctor.

The first appointment is a full intake, covering cycle history, symptoms across the month, sleep, stress, digestion, weight history, medications, and any bloodwork you already have. Testing follows from that rather than preceding it.

The work is to treat the underlying causes of the imbalance rather than each symptom on its own.

Ottawa patients see the same practitioner for each visit rather than starting over each time.

Naturopathic doctors in Ontario are regulated health professionals. Care runs alongside your family doctor, gynecologist, or endocrinologist rather than in place of them.

What Balancing Hormones Actually Involves

Insulin comes first more often than patients expect, because blood sugar drives sex hormones. Steady eating, adequate protein, and enough fiber do more for a cycle than most supplements will, and our weight loss and metabolic health page covers that ground, and dietary guidance is part of the naturopathic consultation itself.

Cortisol and sleep come next. Chronic stress suppresses ovulation and worsens nearly every hormonal picture, which is why the nervous system is treated as part of hormone care rather than separate from it.

Nutrient status matters, particularly vitamin D, iron, B vitamins, and magnesium, and these are prescribed based on results rather than by default, through made-for-you vitamin formulas rather than off the shelf.

When thyroid disease is confirmed, it is treated as such, with your physician involved.

Compounded Hormone Therapy

Where a prescriber determines hormone therapy is appropriate, our pharmacy can compound it, including compounded bioidentical hormone therapy. Bioidentical simply means the hormone is structurally identical to the one your body makes. Compounding lets a prescription be tailored to the individual, whether that is a dose that is not commercially manufactured, a form such as a cream, capsule or troche rather than a tablet, or a preparation without a filler you react to.

Compounded bioidentical hormone therapy is prescriber-led and is used where a commercially available product does not fit, rather than as a default alternative to one. Your naturopathic doctor and pharmacist work together on it, and the pharmacy covers it in full on the custom compounded medications page.

The NutriChem Difference

At NutriChem, your practitioner and pharmacist work under one roof. Custom-compounded prescriptions and made-for-you vitamin formulas, not off-the-shelf supplements. For hormone care, that means testing, interpretation, and, where a prescription calls for it, preparation all happen at one address rather than across three. NutriChem has worked this way at 2599 Carling Avenue since 1981.

Common Questions

A blood panel measuring your sex hormones, thyroid and adrenal markers, timed to your cycle where that matters. It is the starting point for most hormone care here, because the symptoms of very different conditions overlap almost completely.

Not as such. It is a description rather than a diagnosis, which is exactly why it needs testing. What sits underneath it is usually thyroid disease, PMOS, insulin resistance, perimenopause, or a cortisol problem, and each is a different answer.

Yes. You can book directly, and the free 15-minute discovery call lets you ask what testing would apply before you commit to a consultation.
