Naturopathic Fertility Support in Ottawa
NutriChem’s clinic on Carling Avenue provides naturopathic fertility support to patients across Ottawa. A fertility naturopath works on what is reachable and modifiable, meaning ovulation, thyroid function, insulin and blood sugar, nutrient status, sperm quality, and the health of both partners before conception. This is support alongside medical fertility care rather than instead of it, and that distinction matters more on this page than anywhere else in the clinic.

What A Fertility Naturopath Does
Naturopathic doctors in Ontario do not perform IVF or IUI, do not prescribe fertility drugs, and do not replace a reproductive endocrinologist. What they do is work on the physiology underneath conception and coordinate with the fertility clinic you are already attending.
Two groups tend to find this useful. People preparing to conceive who want their health in order first, and people already in fertility treatment who want the surrounding physiology supported while they go through it.
When To See A Fertility Specialist
Time is the one thing fertility care cannot get back, so this belongs before anything else on this page.
Standard fertility guidance, followed in Canada and internationally, is to see a fertility specialist after twelve months of trying if you are 35 or younger, after six months if you are 36 to 40, and without delay if you are over 40. Do not wait for those windows if you have irregular or absent cycles, a diagnosis of PMOS, formerly PCOS, endometriosis, a history of pelvic surgery or pelvic infection, two or more miscarriages, or a known problem with sperm.
Naturopathic care should never be the reason a referral gets postponed. If you are inside those windows, we will tell you to book. In Ontario, an initial consultation with a fertility clinic and the related diagnostic testing are covered by OHIP, and the province funds one cycle of treatment for eligible patients. That referral is separate from naturopathic care, which is not OHIP-covered. The point is that the cost of finding out where you stand is low, and the cost of waiting is not.
What Affects Fertility
Ovulation is the first question. Cycles that are irregular, absent, or very short can mean ovulation is not happening reliably, and PMOS, the condition formerly called PCOS, is the most common cause of ovulatory infertility.
Thyroid function affects both conception and early pregnancy, and subclinical thyroid problems are common and easily missed on a TSH-only test.
Insulin resistance affects ovulation and egg quality, and it is not confined to people carrying extra weight. Our weight loss and metabolic health page covers that in more detail.
Nutrient status matters, particularly folate, vitamin D, iron, B12, and omega-3s. Folate needs to be in place before conception rather than after, since the neural tube closes in the first weeks, often before a pregnancy is confirmed.
Age affects both egg quality and egg quantity. Some nutrients, CoQ10 among them, are used to support egg quality, and your practitioner will be honest about how modest that support is. What no supplement changes is the number of eggs, which falls with age. Saying that plainly is part of the job.
Stress and sleep affect cycles, and chronic stress can disrupt ovulation outright. Our stress and nervous system page goes into that further.
Fertility Is Not Only A Female Question
A male factor contributes in roughly half of cases, yet semen analysis is one of the last tests people think of despite being among the cheapest and fastest available. Leaving it late wastes months that were never available to waste.
Sperm take around three months to develop, which means changes made now show up in a sample about ninety days later. That window is worth using. Heat, smoking, alcohol, certain medications, and nutrient status all affect the result.
Where both partners are being assessed, both are worth supporting.
Testing We Use
Testing is ordered where it will change the plan, not by routine, and we read what your fertility clinic has already done rather than repeat it.
Cycle assessment covers day three hormones, progesterone in the luteal phase to confirm that ovulation is actually happening, and anti-Mullerian hormone as a marker of ovarian reserve.
A full thyroid panel includes TSH, free T3, free T4, and antibodies, since thyroid antibodies carry weight in pregnancy and a TSH-only test will not detect them.
Fasting glucose and insulin are measured together, along with ferritin, B12, folate, and vitamin D.
Semen analysis is ordered through your physician or fertility clinic, and we will encourage it early rather than late.
What Support Can Look Like
Preconception nutrition comes first. Folate before conception, adequate protein, steady blood sugar, and a plan built for both partners rather than one of you. Our nutrition service works alongside naturopathic care.
Supplementation is prescribed based on the results. Folate, vitamin D, and iron, where ferritin is low, are the common ones, and CoQ10 and inositol are widely used, though the evidence varies considerably between them, and your practitioner will tell you honestly what is reasonable to expect. No supplement overcomes age, and anyone who suggests otherwise is selling something.
Where ovulation is the problem, the work usually runs through insulin, thyroid or PMOS rather than through the ovary itself.
Where you are already in IVF or IUI, care is coordinated with your fertility clinic and nothing is given that could interfere with your protocol. Tell your practitioner every medication and supplement you are taking, without exception.
Male factor support uses the ninety-day window, which is the most efficient thing available to most couples and the most commonly skipped.
Fertility Acupuncture
We also offer fertility acupuncture in clinic. It is used as supportive care alongside your fertility treatment, not as a substitute for it, and some patients use it through IVF or IUI cycles. Evidence on acupuncture for fertility is mixed, and your practitioner will be straight with you about what it can and cannot do rather than overselling it.
The NutriChem Difference
At NutriChem your practitioner and pharmacist work under one roof. Custom-compounded prescriptions and made-for-you vitamin formulas, not off-the-shelf supplements.
For fertility that means a preconception formula matched to your own bloodwork rather than a generic prenatal bought off a shelf. It also means that where your fertility specialist prescribes something that needs compounding, it can be prepared here rather than sourced elsewhere.

Common Questions
A naturopathic doctor can work on the factors that affect conception and are modifiable, which commonly means ovulation, thyroid function, insulin, nutrient status and sperm quality. Nobody can promise a pregnancy, and any clinic that does should worry you. What can be said is that these factors are testable and often treatable.
No. If you are inside the referral windows above, see a specialist. Naturopathic care is designed to run alongside that, and using it as a substitute costs time that fertility does not give back.
Yes, provided your practitioner knows exactly what you are taking and coordinates with your clinic. Some supplements interact with fertility protocols, which is why nothing here is prescribed blindly.
Ideally yes. A male factor is present in about half of cases, and the three-month sperm development window means changes made early are the ones that count.
